Nefertiti Hotel sits in the middle of Luxor’s old souq on the East Bank, about 400 metres from Luxor Temple. You hear the market before you see the hotel: spice sellers, scooters, the call to prayer from three directions at once. Climb up to the roof terrace, though, and all of it drops away.

Breakfast is served up there each morning with the temple on one side and the Theban hills across the Nile on the other, and it’s a proper spread, one of the better hotel breakfasts in Luxor at this price. In the evening the terrace turns into a restaurant doing home-style Egyptian cooking, with themed dinner nights a few times a week.
The rooms are simple and clean rather than fancy: air conditioning, private bathrooms, a kettle with tea and coffee, satellite TV and free WiFi. Some have balconies or city views, and there are family rooms too.
One thing to know before booking: there’s no lift, so the upper floors mean stairs.
